Having met with Liam the other week to discuss my gainz, one thing that was brought up, and something I've been warned about before by other nutritionists, is my highly acidic diet.

As with anything in life, there needs to be a balance, and when it comes to the pH scale, getting the right balance between your acidic and alkaline levels is key to good health.

The regular western diet of meat, grains, alcohol, coffee (I still love you coffee), sugar etc is highly acidic. And with high acidic levels comes an environment in our body where disease can thrive. 

Furthermore, a low pH reading means you have low oxygen levels, this leaving you most open to low energy levels and illness. High acid levels can also play havoc on your digestive system, circulatory system, immune system and a whole host of other systems in the body.

So to combat these, we need to increase our alkaline levels, and here are 4 ways to do that:

Add lemon or lime to your water

One of the things that Liam has got be doing to improve my pH levels is to add some fresh lemon or lime to a glass of water. I do this first thing when I wake up and before I go to bed. 

Although both lemons and limes are acid by nature, they are awesome as due to their mineral content they become alkaline forming.

Eat more veg

Meh, I know. But your veg is key. I don't think too much needs to be said about veg. The green stuff is awesome and needs to be eaten. Its just a shame it doesn't take like chocolate.

(whilst writing this I got side track, and despite my best efforts I cant find anything on the internet that says chocolate is at all alkalising, although here are 7 proven health benefits of chocolate).

Drink some greens

Eating a  good quantity of quality vegetables isnt always easy or practical in every day life. So supplementing your intake with greens powders is a good way to go. Phil Richards has a chocolate coconut greens powder, thus answering my earlier wish. Chocolate tasting greens. 

Adding a scoop in to your greens smooth or home made soups is an easy way to increase your intake of Alkaline foods. Or just mix with water.

Go Herbal

A good way to treat acidosis or to simply increase your pH alkalinity is to start drinking herbal teas. Sure, these don't taste as good as coffee, but needs must i guess. 

Testing pH Levels

If you're interesting in knowing what your pH level is, then you can buy testing strips from amazon, and test your levels first thing in the morning. The ideal pH level of our body should be around 7.30 - 7.45.
